Arden 2 Drawer Bedside Table – White

Choosing Bedside Table Height Around Your Bed

The right bedside table height starts with your bed as you use it: frame, mattress and any topper together. Matching a number in a general size guide is less useful than checking whether you can put down a book, reach the lamp and open a drawer from your usual position.

A tabletop around mattress level can be a useful starting point for comparison. Treat it as a trial position, not a universal rule. Beds, mattresses, lamps and personal reach vary, and a table that works on one side may not suit the person on the other.

Take three measurements at the bedside

  1. Measure from the finished floor to the top of the mattress, including a topper normally left in place.
  2. Measure the clear width beside the bed at the narrowest point, allowing for the bed frame and nearby furniture.
  3. Measure how far a tabletop can project into the room before it interferes with walking, curtains or a door.

Write down which dimension is which. A product title containing a centimetre measurement may be describing width, not height. Use the full dimensions diagram or ask for confirmation before shortlisting on that number.

If you expect to replace the mattress soon, include the likely new setup in the comparison. Otherwise, you could choose a table around a temporary bed height and find its position less convenient later.

Try the reach before buying

Use a stable existing surface at a similar height, if available, to test the arrangement without leaning or balancing objects on an unstable pile. Lie and sit as you normally would. Try reaching to the front corner and the back of the proposed tabletop; those can feel quite different.

Think about the action, not simply the distance. Picking up glasses needs a clear landing spot. Switching a lamp off depends on where its switch sits. Lifting a water glass over a high bedside edge may be less convenient than placing it beside the bed. Keep essential items in a position you can reach comfortably.

Check the lamp as a separate decision

The table height and lamp height work together. Set out the lamp you already own, or measure the base and shade of one you are considering. Check that the shade will not crowd the pillow or contact bedding and that the switch remains accessible.

Follow the lamp manufacturer's instructions for placement and clearances. A taller table does not automatically create better reading light. Shade shape, bulb position and where you sit also affect the result, so test the actual arrangement where possible.

A worked bedside comparison

Suppose the top of a mattress is 62cm from the floor. You are considering hypothetical tables 52cm and 64cm high. The first sits 10cm below the mattress surface; the second sits 2cm above it. Neither difference alone tells you which will feel better.

With the lower option, check whether you have to reach down awkwardly to retrieve a small object. With the higher option, check whether the edge gets in the way when reaching sideways. Then repeat the test sitting up, because the convenient position for a lamp switch may differ from the convenient position for a glass.

Record the result as “easy to reach while lying down”, “easy to switch on while seated” and “clear beside pillow”. This creates a useful comparison instead of choosing the closest number by default.

Look below the tabletop too

A drawer needs clearance from the bed frame, duvet and any nearby rug. Check that you can open it from the position in which you will actually use it. Handles or drawer fronts may project beyond the stated cabinet depth.

For a specific starting point, review the Arden 2 Drawer Bedside Table in White, then compare the full height and depth information across the bedside cabinets collection. Choose after the reach test, and confirm assembly, stability and care instructions for the model you select.
