Alice Springs 54.8cm Tall 4-Drawer Chest – Elegancia Oak

Tall vs Wide Chest of Drawers: Which Fits Your Room and Routine?

A tall chest can make use of a narrow stretch of wall, while a wide chest can offer a broader top and a different arrangement of drawers. Neither shape automatically holds more. The useful choice depends on internal drawer measurements, how you reach them and what happens in the room when they are open.

Start with the job you want the chest to do. Keeping underwear beside the wardrobe is a different brief from storing jumpers for two people or providing a surface for a mirror. Write that job down before comparing finishes.

Measure the wall and the working space

Record the available width, depth and height at the intended position. Include skirting boards, projecting handles, sockets and any window ledge above. The tallest point of a chest matters if the wall slopes; the widest point matters when a door or curtain sits beside it.

Next, mark the footprint with removable tape that is suitable for the floor. Add the drawer opening shown in the product information and stand where you would use it. Check whether you can bend, step back and carry a laundry basket without moving the bed. A narrow front can still create an awkward route if the unit is deep.

Compare the two shapes against your routine

Tall and wide chest decision checks
Question Tall chest Wide chest
Where is the spare wall space? Consider it when width is limited and height is available. Consider it when there is a longer clear stretch of wall.
What must fit inside? Check whether narrow drawers suit the folded items. Check whether broader drawers can be divided usefully.
Who uses the upper drawers? Try the likely reach before choosing. Check the actual height; wide does not necessarily mean low.
What belongs on top? Keep the planned surface arrangement modest. Measure the complete arrangement, including lamp or mirror supports.

Test capacity with a real clothing sample

Fold several of the items you expect to store: a winter jumper, a T-shirt, nightwear and a pair of trousers. Measure their normal folded sizes without compressing them for the test. Sketch the usable internal drawer rectangle and see how the groups fit.

Leave room to take an item out without disturbing everything beside it. The drawer count is a way to divide categories, not a capacity measurement. Four shallow drawers and four deep drawers support different routines even when their fronts look similar.

A worked room example

Imagine a room with a clear 70cm stretch beside the wardrobe and a separate 120cm stretch opposite the bed. A hypothetical chest measuring 55cm wide could fit the first stretch, while an 85cm-wide option could fit the second. Those numbers only eliminate unsuitable widths; they do not settle the purchase.

In the first position, check that the wardrobe door clears the chest and its handles. In the second, check that an open drawer leaves a usable route past the bed. If the wide option blocks that route, the extra wall space offers little benefit. If the tall option puts the everyday drawer out of comfortable reach, reorganise the proposed categories or reconsider the position.

Keep the final comparison specific

The Alice Springs Tall 4-Drawer Chest in Elegancia Oak provides a named tall format to investigate. Compare its full current measurements with alternatives in the chest of drawers collection, including internal dimensions where supplied.

Before ordering, confirm the assembly and wall-restraint instructions for the exact model. A lower or wider shape does not remove those requirements. Choose the unit whose drawers fit both the clothing and the room, then assign the most frequently used items to the easiest drawers to reach.
